The Warriors took on the Butler Tornadoes in round one of the WPIAL playoffs Tuesday night on their home turf. The first quarter of the game was off to a slow start for the Warriors. The Tornadoes were able to get two goals past the Warriors in the first half leaving the score 2-0.
The second quarter didn’t go in the Warriors favor either. Butler’s midfield line was able to control the draw circle and gain possession of the ball leaving the Warriors without many scoring opportunities. The Tornadoes racked up a lead in the second quarter with a score of 7-2. Annabelle Aquino and Georgia Vislocky had the first two Warrior goals of the night.
The second half proved to be a different story for the Warriors. It was apparent they weren’t going down without a fight. Adalyn Hawk drove the ball down into the offensive zone after a successful clear from goaltender, Madison Hagan, which created an opportunity for Georgia Vislocky to score a free position goal about 5 minutes into the third quarter. Ayla Moffa dodged through several Butler defenders to get her first one of the night. Georgia Vislocky scored two more free position goals in the third quarter in addition to Aquino’s second goal of the night. The Warriors defense (Botti, Brobst, Prosdocimo, and Spadone) were a force to be reckoned with in the third quarter. They denied the Tornadoes on every attempt at net. The Warriors made it a tie game (7-7)with 11 seconds in the quarter.
The Warriors had a lot at stake and were thirsty to take home the win as they entered the final quarter of the night. Ayla Moffa helped put her team in the lead by scoring the first goal of the last quarter. Adalyn Hawk, Mary Brobst, Gianna Botti, and Maura Spadone helped create scoring opportunities for their team by causing turnovers and using their speed on the clears. The Warriors ended the game with 8 unanswered goals and took home a first round WPIAL playoff win. The girls travel to Upper St. Clair Thursday night for a second round matchup.
